Set out a few materials and let the child choose what to make. A drawing, collage or coloring project gives you a manageable starting point without needing a complete art setup.
Choose materials for the activity
Read the age guidance and instructions on supplies. Set out only what you need, and keep food separate from the materials. Follow the label directions for use and cleanup.
Make room to work
Clear a table or suitable work surface. Put paper and supplies within reach and allow enough time to finish or put the work aside. For a fabric-coloring project, follow the product’s directions for protecting the surface.
Ask about the picture
Let the child describe what they made before guessing what it represents. You can ask about a color, shape or part of the story. They can also choose to keep working without explaining it.
Try a shared project
Each person can make one part of a paper scene. Decide where the pieces will go together, then give everyone room to make their part differently.
Choose what to keep
Ask which pieces they want to display or save. Photograph larger projects, write a date on paper work and keep a folder for selected drawings.
