Ask what the graduate is doing next before choosing a gift. A college move, new job, trip and first apartment each call for different things. Start with something they need, then add a note about what you’re proud of.
For a dorm move
Check the school’s packing list and room rules. A laundry bag, desk supplies or a gift card can be useful once you know what the student already has. Measure the bed pillow before buying a pillowcase; mattress size does not tell you the pillow dimensions.
For a first apartment or job
Ask about missing household items or the commute. Avoid buying equipment without checking what they own and what fits their space. Cash or a gift card lets them choose after the move.
Choose a pillowcase message
Call Mom is a reminder to stay in touch. Be Awesome and Be Brilliant use short black-lettered messages. Every Day’s a Good Day has colorful lettering. Choose the design for the person, then check the listing for size and quantity.
Add your own words
Mention a project they finished, a difficult term they got through or a quality you admire. A specific note says more than a generic promise about their future. If you’re sending the gift, confirm the delivery address and check the current shipping policy.
