A long recommendation list can make choosing harder. Start with one thing you want from your next book: a short read, a particular subject, a familiar author or a new genre.
Name what you liked last time
Think about the pace, setting or style of a book you finished. Tell a bookseller or librarian those details when asking for a recommendation. Mention anything you would prefer to avoid.
Compare a few samples
Read the opening pages of two or three books. If the voice does not interest you, try another. Check the length and format, too; a print book, ebook and audiobook fit different routines.
Use your library list
Save titles as you hear about them, then check the library catalog before buying. Put a hold on a book you want to try. Keep a separate short list of the books you are most interested in reading next.
Ask about the recommendation
When a friend suggests a book, ask what they liked about it. A specific answer about characters, ideas or writing style tells you more than a rating alone.
Keep the next book within reach
Choose one book from your list and put it where you usually read. A bookmark and a light are enough to get started. If you add a reading-themed pillow cover, check the dimensions against your existing pillow.
